Blood Fire Death: A Tribute to Quorthon and the Music of Bathory at Brutal Assault! 21.11.2024
Twenty years after Quorthon’s passing, his legacy comes alive in a unique performance at Brutal Assault, presenting iconic Bathory songs — Blood Fire Death: A Tribute to Quorthon and the Music of Bathory — led by members of Watain, Enslaved, Aura Noir, Vltimas, Mayhem, Bathory, and several other exclusive guests!
On June 3rd 2004 the metal world lost one of it’s biggest icons. Thomas ‘Quorthon’ Forsberg was instrumental in redefining metal as we knew it. With the seminal 1984 debut, “Bathory”, Quorthon single handedly laid the foundation of what has become the world-renowned phenomenon, that is black metal. There was Venom before him, but musically he laid out the blueprint for myriads of bands that followed, especially from Scandinavia, in the coming decades.
Upon his passing a wide array of celebrated musicians from the Norwegian black metal scene was summoned to pay their tribute to the fallen pioneer. At the annual Hole in the Sky festival in Bergen, Norway, musicians from bands like Darkthrone, Emperor, Enslaved, Satyricon, Immortal, Gorgoroth and Aura Noir performed a carefully selected set of Bathory classics that helped shape the sound of the Norwegian scene. In 20224, on the 20th anniversary of Quorthon’s passing, the core members of the original tribute constellation got together again at the Beyond the Gates festival, held in the revered Grieghallen, to once again pay their respect to the legend and the music of Bathory. This time the line-up also included E from Watain, who also contributed to the stage design and concept. The result can be summed up by two words: Pure magic.
As people have lamented their praise for the show, we have decided to do some select shows with the concept at some carefully selected summer festivals next summer. Blood Fire Death – A tribute to Quorthon and the Music of Bathory will feature the same band that fronted the 2024 edition:

In addition to the band, the concert will feature guest singers and musicians such as Grutle (Enslaved), Gaahl (Trelldom, ex-Gorgoroth) and Frederick Melander (ex-Bathory) along variety of other exklusive guests that will be announced later.
The show is based on Quorthon’s own vision of how he pictured a Bathory concert would look like should he ever bring his music to the live stage. „20 years after his passing, Quorthon continue to shiver our spines, curdle our blood and fuck our brains up with his music,“ says vocalist E (watain) about the project.

The titan of thrash metal Kerry King is heading to Brutal Assault!
Kerry King is a thrash metal legend, best known as the co-founder and guitarist of the iconic band Slayer, a cornerstone of "Big Four." Across nearly four decades, King’s relentless riffs and aggressive songwriting drove Slayer to the forefront of heavy music with albums like "Reign in Blood" and "Seasons in the Abyss". Known for his unapologetically brutal sound, King helped shape a genre and left an indelible mark on the world of metal.
Following Slayer’s final show in 2019, King launched his solo project, unleashing his signature intensity on "From Hell I Rise", set to release in May 2024. Making their debut at Josefov Fortress, American speed rockers ZEKE will blow you away with their aggressive and blisteringly fast blend of punk rock, hardcore, and rock 'n' roll. Representing the Czech scene, BRUTALLY DECEASED will bring their signature old-school death metal in the classic Swedish style.
EXHORDER are coming to Brutal Assault - the New Orleans pioneers of groove-laden thrash will unleash their raw power with unrelenting intensity. KING WOMAN will envelop you in their hypnotic blend of ethereal doom and melancholic shoegaze, while XIII. STOLETÍ bring their iconic gothic rock, weaving dark poetry into haunting melodies.
We bring you another batch of bands! The British collective Five the Hierophant will bring their gloomy mix of black, doom, and post-metal! Alongside their unique sound, they’ll impress you with their lineup – in addition to traditional instruments, you'll hear saxophone, French horn, trumpet, and ritual drums. Norwegian multi-instrumentalist Sylvaine will enchant with her blend of black metal, post-rock, and shoegaze, while the reborn American ensemble Sleepytime Gorilla Museum will deliver an avant-garde metal performance that blurs the line between music and theater! One thing these artists have in common – they’ll all perform at the Josefov Fortress for the first time!
We are deeply sorry to bring you sad news – White Ward have been forced to cancel all their scheduled performances for 2025 due to legislative reasons, including their planned show at this year’s Brutal Assault. You can learn more directly from the band's statement:
After the tour cancellation of our colleagues from 1914, many of you asked about the fate of our own tours.
We answered positively because we truly believed that everything would go as planned, since we were working with another organization and ministry — the same ones who successfully helped us make a mini-tour last spring, including our performance at the Roadburn Festival. We were almost certain that things would work out for us.
Until last Friday.
A few days ago, we experienced a haunting déjà vu. We suddenly found ourselves in the exact same situation as in the spring of 2023. New orders were issued from above, rules were changed overnight without any transition period, and we were left with zero chance to fight it. No warning, no room for discussion — just a wall, cold and impenetrable.
There is no point in digging deeper into the details. It’s just another dark and endless rabbit hole.
What we can say now is this: we are canceling all tours, shows, and festival performances planned for this year. All live activities are put on hold indefinitely — until radical changes in the situation make it possible for us to return.
We deeply apologize to our fans, our booking agent Sylvain, all the promoters, and everyone who was involved in organizing these tours. This is beyond heartbreaking for us.
We don’t know if we’ll find the time or strength to work on anything related to WHITE WARD in the near future. After three years of war, we are mentally drained, and almost every member of the band is struggling with personal challenges. But we will try.
Yet one thing is certain: WHITE WARD will live. And if we survive — if we don’t burn in a nuclear fire — then we will return when the light finally breaks through the horizon. And when we do, we will return in a new form, with renewed purpose and unstoppable force, carrying our own manifest.

This year’s Brutal Assault announces its final bands! Norwegian group Funeral will bring slow and dark doom metal, while the Brazilian all-female formation Crypta and Czech brutal death metal machine Cutterred Flesh will deliver a solid dose of death metal. Slovak band Besna will showcase their mix of post-black metal with elements of Slovak folklore, and South Bohemian quartet Marked As An Enemy will serve up modern metalcore/hardcore. Rounding out the lineup are the musically and visually artistic grunge project Pan Lynx by Michal Skořepa, and Brno’s DIY hardcore/punk icon See You In Hell! Although this is a stylistically diverse batch of bands, one thing unites them – all of them will be making their debut at Brutal Assault!
Did we say last week that the lineup was complete? We were wrong! We're adding the Czech thrash metal powerhouse FAÜST to the lineup! AVULSED were already part of the lineup, but we're "announcing" them again as an apology for having left them out of the death metal genre poster.
The bands performing on the KAL stage will be revealed very soon, along with the day-by-day breakdown of all performers. Stay tuned!

The last piece of the puzzle line-up for this year's Brutal Assault is 25 new artists and DJs who will perform at Keep Ambient Lodge! Traditionally, it brings a diverse musical program oscillating between a wide range of genre mixes and prominent personalities of the music scene. Ambient, industrial, noise, dark folk, psychedelic, dark rituals and performance, dungeon synth, harsh noise, EBM or also industrial techno, digital hardcore or synthwave. All this, as usual, until the early hours of the morning. New musical worlds and a distinctly progressive sound of the club scene deepen the unique concept of our festival.
Here’s the regular update on remaining tickets! As you can see, Thursday day tickets are completely sold out. The only way to enjoy Gojira now is to join the last lucky few who manage to grab a full festival pass in time.
