The Honda S2000 is renowned as an engineering masterpiece as well as the proof of a sharp technical expertise, but had a dicreet career, as about 110000 copies have been sold in the world (less than 700 in France). With its noble package and its conventional FR layout inherited from the traditional British roadsters, its sober styling has quite well passed the years, better than its German competitors like the Audi TT Roadster, the BMW Z3, the Mercedes SLK and the Porsche Boxster. The fact that the S2000 is quite rare in our countries helps making it looking fresh but not only, as its deep legitimacy lies in the 50th birthday of the brand. Thirty years later, history was about to repeat, as a comeback of the S sportscar legacy to its origins. Two concept-cars have embodied this vision of a modern Honda sportscar, one designed by the internal Design 1 Studio, the other one designed by the famous italian coachbuilder Pininfarina, on a similar layout : two-seater roadster, mid-front five-cylinder engine, RWD, 18 inch wheels and suspension derived from the NSX. Honda Argento Vivo by Pininfarina (1995) This masterpiece has sealed the end of a fruitful collaboration between Pininfarina and Honda, started in 1978, that led to some of the best-looking cars ever built by the Japanese manufacturer. Propelled by a G25A engine, the Argento Vivo offers a curvy European styling, beautifully balanced volumes, elegance and timeless personality. Its two symmetrical large polished-aluminium bonnets, shining like 'quick silver' ('argento vivo' in Italian) are the main character of this study, being aesthetic as well as technically lightweight. Davide Archangeli, the argento Vivo's designer, is one of these pure talents gone too soon, who has designed two other masterpieces : the Peugeot 406 Coupé and the BMW 5-Series E60. An urban legend tells that this protoytpe could be the refined version of a draft made for BMW, underlayed by this grille, unusual for a Honda. The Argento Vivo also offered a retractable glass roof identical to the Mercedes SLK's one, that would be unveiled the year after. Genuine technical achievement, it allowed to manage a storage compartment behind the seats, in addition to the aluminium bespoke suitcase. The interior was strongly inspired by the nautic world, with blue leather, mahogany coloured bentwood and aluminium controls. Twenty years later, the Argento Vivo still has a magnetic stance, thanks to its refined styling that would have diserved to be declined on the S2000. But history has decided otherwise… Honda SSM (1995) In the same time indeed, the Design 1 Studio was thinking about Honda's future, diving in a deep introspection of what would be the brand in the next years. Masahiro Nakano, head of the studio, was secretly dreaming of a modern version of the S500/S600/S800, that had been formalized by the proposal of Daisuke Sawai. Then the SSM (Sports Study Model) was born, with its cold and sharp styling language, when the Argento Vivo was warm and curvy. Driven by the soul of a genuine 'barchetta', propelled by a G20A engine, this silver monolith had black-coated pillars and frames in order to visually mask them, giving the impression to drive a competition car. Indeed, the über-modern Formula 1 inspired Daisuke Sawai, even more than the heritage of the brand. On a side view, the rising line running from the front of the bonnet to the end of the trunk could certainly remind the chromed edge of the S500/S600/S800. But on a bird's view, it evokes strinkingly the narrow cockpit of a formula car, wheels apart, just linked to the body thanks to a sheet of stretched metal. The ultra-long bonnet means power, whereas the side air vents and the diffuser flatters a cold and withdrawn sportivity. The interior pushes further the sporty spirit of the SSM, with a double-cockpit separating the passenger and the driver thanks to a shoulder-height bar. The driver faces a narrow place dedicated to handling, with an ignition button, close-to-hand controls and a CRT (!) customizable display, reminding those used in competition for lisibility purpose. A true Formula 1! The pure and hard technological attitude of the SSM has been finally chosen for designing the S2000, only keeping in mind the future as an objective. Except one little thing that makes the link with the past : the lateral Honda monograms, that quote the first Hondas'one…

-The Argento Vivo or the very last collaboration between Pininfarina and Honda, after more than 15 years of partnership…

-A genuine roadster dedicated to driving pleasure, respecting the spirit of the traditional British roadsters of the 70's, with a front-end maybe inspired by BMW…

-The lightweight aluminium structure developed by Pininfarina, where can be seen the NSX suspension, and the 5-cylinder mid-front engine…

-The polished aluminium bonnets are the key feature of the Argento Vivo, with its curves reflecting the surroundings of the bodywork…

-Typical mid-front engine package, seats near the rear axle, and a wonderful balance between the front and the rear…

-Design sketch made by Davide Archangeli in 1994, clearly showing the aluminium bonnets set on top of the body panels…

-Wonderfully balanced profile, roof closed or not, and a remarkable fluid styling…

-The retractable roof mechanism is compact enough to offer a decent storage, optimized thanks to a bespoke aluminium suitcase…

-Nautical inspired interior, composed of noble materials such as leather, wood and aluminium, organized in a sober and qualitative styling…

-Unfortunately, despite its gorgeous styling, this superb concept-car lost the internal competition for the rebirth of the S legacy…

-The SSM has been designed by Honda designers to embody its vision of the next generation sportscar celebrating its 50th anniversary…

-The early sketches showed the intention to mimic the S500/S600/S800 in a modern way…

-But the key sketch made by Daisuke Sawai was inspired by Formula 1 with its typical narrow body drawn with two tense lines from the nose to the trunk, with its wheels apart…

-The 'barchetta' spirit is obvious in these mock-ups, with minimal black windows emphasizing the silver body…

-Please note the air vents on the front fenders, the diffuser with the exhaust tips, the central stop light and the headrests integrated to the frames…

-The 2.0 liter 5-cylinder engine in a mid-front position, behind the strut bar…

-The interior has been designed like a competition car since the early sketches, with a separation bar between the driver and his co-pilot…

-The Formula 1 driving position has inspired the controls, including the gearshift position…

-The end result is a sporty cockpit with specific bucket seats, a low driving position, and a race car atmosphere…

-Controls are easy to set, and the gearshift is very close to the driver…

-The CRT customizable display show various informations about the car, and note that the tachometer focuses only on high revs…

-The SSM has been declined into three liveries : silver / interior gray+blue, champagne / interior black+red, and red / interior black+red, but always with the Honda monogram evoking the first S models…

Acabo de preguntar por la segunda parte.
